A brief paragraph on fitting controlled drugs cabinet

This blog is intended to be informative but not exhaustive reading for fitting controlled drugs cabinets in the United Kingdom.
Licensees may wish to seek their own independent advice to ensure they are compliant.

Fitting Controlled Drugs Cabinet – Information

To buy from our range of Controlled drugs cabinets please click here

There are legislative requirements that relate to the storage of certain schedules of Controlled drugs, see “The Misuse of drugs(Safe custody) regulations 1973”.

A prospective licencee or Licencee’s business will carry out specific and different tasks within their premises which their security measures should seek to mitigate. In order to mitigate these security risks there are certain minimum standards that must be met and the measures set out in “The Misuse of drugs(Safe custody) regulations 1973” are seen as an acceptable minimum standard.

When considering fitting Controlled drugs cabinets:

Layers and levels of security should be considered.

Outer layer or the protection of the surroundings that are necessary for particular risks or your particular surroundings ( Illumination, fencing, CC TV ect.).

Secondary layer or the protection of the building or the part of the building that the Controlled drugs cabinets are to be fitted ( burglar alarm, bars on windows ect.).

Core area or the Controlled drugs cabinets them selves.

Where possible when fitting Controlled Drugs Cabinets they should be installed in an area already protected by an approved intruder alarm. If not then consideration should be given to adapting an existing system to cover the area in which the Controlled drugs cabinets are to be fitted. When fitting Controlled Drugs Cabinets deciding on the correct position is very important and the following points should be satisfied where ever possible.

Fit the Controlled drugs Cabinets in a room that does not have direct access to the outside of the building.

Position the Controlled drugs cabinets in a place so that it is not obvious to prying eyes ( not opposite a door or window etc.)

Fitting Controlled drugs cabinets in a corner with the locks up to a wall is preferable as it will help prevent the door being forced.

Fitting Controlled drugs cabinets in a room that can be locked when the left unattended is preferred.

Do not position the cabinets adjacent to a heat source i.e. heating pipes or a radiator.

Ensure you are not fitting Controlled drugs cabinets in a position that leaves it in direct sunlight.

Position the Controlled drugs cabinets adjacent to similar storage units if possible to make it less conspicuous.

Fit Controlled drugs cabinets in a room that is manned continually or under constant surveillance.

Fitting of Controlled drugs cabinets should always be carried out in a room that is used for medical purposes.

Wall mounted Controlled drugs cabinet should be fitted so that the top of the cabinet is not more than 1750 mm from the floor.

When fitting Controlled drugs cabinets to the wall or floor it is important to use the correct fixings. The manufacturer must include these with the Controlled drugs cabinet as part of the BS2881:1989.

M10 sleeve anchor bolts for fitting controlled drugs cabinets

Controlled drugs cabinets must be fixed to a block or brick wall or concrete floor with at least two rag bolt ( expanding bolt) fixings. Each fixing must pass through an internal anchor plate of at least 3 mm thickness and with a surface area of 19355 square millimetres. The anchor plate is to reinforce the area around the fixing to prevent forced removal from the mount.

In some new buildings construction of internal walls is done using a studding and plaster board technique which is unsuitable for fitting Controlled drugs cabinets. In this instance a suitable floor fix cabinet can be purchased which could be fitted to a concrete floor. If none of these are a suitable alternative a solution must be discussed with your accountable officer or suitably qualified person.

Pharmacy Medical can assist you with Bespoke Controlled drugs cabinets and purpose made reinforcing to walls and floors which under normal circumstances are unsuitable for Fitting Controlled drugs cabinets to. Please click here for more information.
