The hospital bedside cabinet incorporates three storage locations providing safe and locked storage for medicines, patients own personal belongings and a general storage cupboard.

Constructed from mild steel and powder coated to provide a hard wearing anti bacterial finish, our bedside cabinet can easily stand up to the day to day requirements of ward life. By using metal rather than wood, plastic or laminate, we have been able to offer a product that solves several problems.

The metal construction of the cabinet allows us to easily customise the shape and design of the cabinet without increasing cost. Where as a plastic alternative may not be able to do this due to the high set up costs of the moulds required to make it.

The metal construction also provides a significantly more hygienic alternative, especially when compared to laminate. When laminate ages it may start to peel away from the board that forms its substance, this is highly likely if the cabinet is to be steam cleaned. This then provides a breading ground for bacteria. With steel the worse that can happen is the paint chips off. If this happens, there is still steel below, and we can easily re finish the part, removing the issue. The paint that we use to finish the cabinets with can also be specified with an anti bacterial coating.

Our hospital bedside cabinet can also be specified with various locking options. Available with either a standard key lock, or electronic RFID locks, this cabinet can be easily incorporated into your hospitals systems. Our electronic locks key can even be incorporated into a patients identity bracelet making opening a cupboard very easy, and reducing the cost or lost keys.

The forward facing cupboard incorporates a drop down door, ideal for dispensing from and provides secure useful space for the storage of medicines. The side cupboard is accessible from the bedside and provides secure storage for patients personal effects. This helps to reduce the significant cost of reimbursing patients for lost items. The lower front cupboard is not locked and provides storage for other items. The flat, usable top has no protrusions and makes the top a usable surface. It also incorporates a rear lip to prevent items falling off the back.

Intelligent Keys in Hospital Applications

Intelligent keys are rapidly becoming accepted as a cost effective way of adding traceability and data logging across a hospital environment.

Using an intelligent key, a hospital ward manager is able to programme a key at the start of a shift. This key is then specific to an individual nurse. The key can be programmed to allow access to certain locks so that the nurse can access certain areas within a hospital, without needing to carry around a bunch of keys. The key will then log what lock that key has opened and when, offering a level of traceability never before seen from such a simple system. An added benefit of this system is that a key can be wiped from the system remotely. This means that if a nurse were to loose their key it can be deleted from the system and will stop working, increasing safety.

All that is required for this system to work is an intelligent key, smart lock cylinder and a computer programme. The intelligent key will only work in a smart lock however there are many smart lock options, including euro profile cylinders, compatible with our controlled drugs cabinets, cam locks and padlocks to name a few.

Most hospitals, clinics and pharmacy departments around the United Kingdom use a traditional mechanical lock and key system to control access and maintain the security of their controlled rugs cabinets etc. A standard hospital ward will have many different cupboards, fridges etc. all of which have different locks and therefore a different key. As a result the ward manager, or nurse who is on charge, will be responsible for a large bunch of keys for their shift.

The Patient First Show 2014

The Patient First Show 2014 was a new event organised to promote patient safety and well-being, under the tag line “preventing harm, improving care“. As a new show everyone attending was slightly unsure of what to expect. As ever Closer Still Media put on a brilliant backdrop and the exhibitors, with their diverse range of products and services helped to keep the show interesting.

Over the two days of the show, our new bedside cabinets and laptop trolley were well received. Already on trial in one hospital, and now, as a result of the show scheduled to go on trial in three more, our bedside cabinet is quickly gaining popularity for its unique design and construction, combined with its customisation potential and cost. Its three separate compartments are of the time dividing safely and securely with new electronic locks, medicine storage, patients personal belongings and other items.

Designed in conjunction with Scunthorpe Hospital, the bedside cabinet uses the latest locking technology and combines this with a hygienic metal construction to make a robust, secure and easy to steam clean unit.

Also on display was our laptop trolley. This is a cost effective solution to electronic prescribing in hospitals. Designed to accommodate laptops and tablet computers the height adjustable trolley is both light and robust whilst its construction makes it infection control and user friendly.
