CLIQ Electronic Locking System from ASSA Abloy

Electronic locking system to suit our controlled drugs cabinets

The majority of hospitals, clinics and pharmacy departments across the UK use traditional mechanical lock systems to control and maintain the security of their drug cabinets. A typical hospital ward will have several cupboards and fridges with a different key for each and the ward manager or nurse, who is on duty for that time period, will be responsible for these keys for the duration of their shift.

However, Mike Urwin, Director of Pharmacy and Medicine Management at Scunthorpe Hospital highlighted a key flaw in the current medicine management system employed throughout the NHS, “a nurse will spend an average of 40 minutes per shift looking for keys.” Consequently, this can inevitably compromise the security of these drug cabinets, as they will be left open for longer than necessary when the correct key is being searched for. Valuable time is inevitably lost on the ward, not only when nurses are searching for their keys but also when they have to spend time trying to work out which key fits the lock in question.

How the CLIQ electronic locking system works

Enter CLIQ. With CLIQ, each staff member is assigned their own key granting them access for their shift; ultimately saving the time wasted looking for other key-holders or looking for the right key for the lock. Abloy CLIQ also removes the security issue that arises when a key is misplaced- as the electromechanical system enables a lost key to be simply deleted from the system. Significantly, this saves the time and money wasted from having to change the locks on every occasion that an important key is misplaced or stolen.

Electronic Locking Audit Trails

Abloy CLIQ contains an audit trail which allows users of the system to track who last used each drug cabinet and at which time they used it- further increasing the security of the ward. One of the main benefits of Abloy CLIQ is the convenience that it offers to the end user. For example, in the NHS, the ward managers at the hospital are able to access all of the cabinets and cupboards that they need to use with just one key, as opposed to the multiple keys that they would need to have access to, with a traditional mechanical lock system.

Electronic locking and our controlled drugs cabinets

All of our controlled drugs cabinets, medicine cabinets and medicine trolleys are CLIQ compatible.

To install CLIQ on our cabinets, providing they are currently fitted with; or due to be purchased with a euro cylinder lock, all you have to do is change the cylinder. It is as simple as that.

Installing this system has never been easier and the benefits are huge, both in terms of time and security.

By making our cabinets CLIQ compatible, you are buying in confidence, that should you wish to upgrade to this system in the future you will be able to do so, or if you have CLIQ already, our cabinets will work.

We can adapt any of the products we manufacture to work with a CLIQ lock, please contact us to discuss.

CLIQ and the Misuse of Drugs Act

CLIQ locks meet all of the requirements of the misuse of drugs act. As the CLIQ system still operates a euro cylinder lock, and subsequently throws a mortise bolt, the locking system meets all of the requirements set down in the act. Furthermore it adds additional levels of security as lost keys can be rendered redundant by being deleted from the system, an audit trail is available, and a time system can be implemented so a specific key will only work within set hours.

We also have additional products that offer the benefits of CLIQ without the cost of installing the system.
